Case study Leobersdorf Municipality

Modern communication with citizens using WhatsApp

Leobersdorf is Austria’s first municipality to support direct contact with citizens using WhatsApp. The sending and receiving of messages is processed centrally using WhatsATool from atms

“Reaching citizens wherever they are on the move – that’s what we want from our new WhatsApp service. The offer has been very well received by citizens and is being further developed.”

Requirement

Whether via the community newspaper, the web site, info screens or their own mobile phone app, the committed municipal administration team would like to keep Leobersdorf citizens up to date at all times via multimedia provision of information.

So that citizens can receive information quickly - especially when they are on the move - Leobersdorf is the first municipality in Austria which has decided to offer a WhatsApp service. In doing so, Leobersdorf is taking a lead role in contemporary dialogue with citizens.

atms Solution

In order to ensure a quick and successful implementation, atms trained the municipality’s employees on site and provided a registration widget for the municipality’s web site. After a short test phase, the municipality was delighted to receive positive feedback.

The WhatsApp service started with a weekly newsletter that provides news from the municipality. Since then, the service has been expanded to include ad hoc information (e.g. regarding construction sites, road closures, safety warnings). In addition, citizens can register for the special channels “Bridge Race”, “Swimming” (open air pool) and “Events”. In this way they receive targeted information that really interests them.

The WhatsApp service also works in the other direction – from the citizens to the town hall. They are pleased that they can contact the municipality administration with questions, as well as to report incidents of vandalism and immediately send photographs to document the damage.
